In Memory: Carol Leahy

In Memory

Carol Weldon Leahy

(1930-2022)

On July 21, we lost a dear friend and an incredible champion of children’s theatre. Carol was first introduced to AT in 1981 when she brought her children to see a show, and as she has said numerous times, she was hooked. In the subsequent forty years, Carol served on the board (including serving as chair during a reorganization that unified all the groups functioning as Adventure Theatre), produced numerous shows and camps, and led a capital campaign.

Her work laid the foundation for Adventure to hire its first full-time, professional Artistic Director, Michael J. Bobbitt. Her support and enthusiasm for Adventure’s work in children’s theatre–including through the merger with Musical Theatre Center–helped Adventure grow as an organization, and more importantly, in serving approximately 40,000 children, families, and school students annually (pre-COVID). She continued to serve on Adventure’s Board until the pandemic’s start.

A woman of vision, leadership, and storytelling, Carol’s service to our community extended beyond Adventure to Montgomery County’s libraries, the Montgomery College Alumni Association and the Silver Spring Stage. Her awards and tributes are too many to name, but perhaps best exemplified by a 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award by County Executive Ike Leggett for Montgomery County Executive’s Award for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities.

Gifts in memory of Carol Leahy in any amount are welcome and will continue her legacy of serving children and youth through musical theatre productions and education. Make your gift now

Rest in peace, Carol.
