Movie Musicals We’re Looking Forward to This Year

In The Heights

Warner Brothers brings us a film adaptation of Lin-Manuel Miranda and Quiara Alegría Hudes’ Tony Award-winning musical about Washington Heights in Manhattan. Adapted by Hudes and directed by Jon M. Chu (Crazy Rich Asians, Step Up 2), this promises to be a dance-your-way-out-of-the-cinema experience with lots of style. Release date has been postponed due to COVID-19 quarantines. But you can always watch the trailer (above). You can also watch Jon Chu’s Ted Talk about the power of representation on film, which we know we will see plenty of in In The Heights.

Everyone’s Talking About Jamie

“It’s got the dreams. It’s got the style. It’s got the moves to make us smile.” Everyone’s Talking About Jamie is musical about a bullied gay teenager who steps out of the darkness in drag. This screen adaptation of Tom MacRae and Dan Gillespie Sells’ production is directed by Jonathan Butterell who also directed the stage production. Slated to be released October 23, 2020.

West Side Story

Steven Spielberg directs this new film adaptation of Leonard Bernstein, Stephen Sondheim, and Arthur Laurents’ classic musical. Says Spielberg, “West Side Story was actually the first piece of popular music our family ever allowed into the home. I absconded with it—this was the cast album from the 1957 Broadway musical—and just fell completely in love with it as a kid. West Side Story has been that one haunting temptation that I have finally given in to.” Slated to be released in December of 2020.
