Workshops

Throughout the year, ATMTC Academy provides workshops for students and parents to help provide greater context and understanding around a college experience and/or career in the performing arts.

Check back regularly as our workshops get scheduled at various times throughout the year.

MUSICAL THEATRE AUDITION WORKSHOP

SATURDAY, APRIL 6, 2024

WINTERGREEN PLAZA, ROCKVILLE
GRADES 4-12

Need help with an important audition? This workshop covers all aspects of preparing and executing an effective and successful audition for musical theatre. Coachings will include discussing the appropriate 32 and/or 16-bar cut for you, understanding your “type”, preparing your music, working with an accompanist, and monologuing the song. We will also discuss “call back” requirements, and helpful hints to land the role!

*Students must bring the current audition cut they are using in the appropriate key.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Lisa Carrier Baker is the Academy Director at Adventure Theatre MTC. She holds a Bachelor of Musical Theatre, Master of Music Education (emphasis in performance), and served as an Artist in Residence for three seasons at the Fletcher Opera Institute at the North Carolina School of the Arts. She is a former adjunct professor of voice at American University and Montgomery College, where she was also a stage director for their Summer Dinner Theatre program and still serves as the Music Supervisor. She has been a guest teaching artist at the Kennedy Center, Georgetown University, Catholic University, and the Tony Award winning Signature Theatre. She maintains an active voice studio where she teaches everything from classical to contemporary singing styles. Her students have been heard on the Broadway stages of Wicked, Bring It On, Dear Evan Hansen, and A Man of No Importance, among others. They can currently be seen on Broadway, National tours, regional theatres, and are local Washington DC Helen Hayes Award winners and nominees.

A good headshot is crucial and can set the tone for your audition before the casting team ever meets you face-to-face. We are also offering headshots for only $100 taken by a professional photographer. They will be able to capture a winning image of you to help build your confidence as you go through the audition process. We will send information on what you need to bring for this photo shoot after you are registered.

KIDS OPEN CALL

Be seen by professional casting directors from the Washington, DC area theatres at Adventure Theatre MTC’s 10th Annual Kids Open Call Audition! 

In the past, children have been cast at Keegan Theatre, Washington National Opera, Studio Theater, Arena Stage, Ford’s Theater, Olney Theater Center, Next Stop Theatre, Creative Cauldron, Woolly Mammoth Theatre, Studio Theatre, and several film and TV projects. 

What to prepare:

Please prepare a 32-bar (1 minute) cut of a song in the appropriate key that best shows your vocal talents. You may choose to sing a capella, although not preferred. 
OR… Please prepare an age-appropriate 1-minute monologue.
