A cook struggles to find their place in the culinary world. When an opportunity to run the crew on a voyage for new ingredients from an undiscovered land arrives, they realize that there’s more to cooking than meets the eye. Spice of Life grapples with racial disparity, personal insecurity, and the importance of where you come from as the cook turns to a family heirloom for guidance.
Brandon Rashad Butts is a writer, director and producer based in the DMV area. He’s most recently participated as a writer in the DMV Q Fests (2.0 & 3.0), Jingle in July (Adventure MTC), and The Variations Project (Rapid Lemon Productions). His full-length plays Personal Protection and Reclamation have received readings at Baltimore Center Stage. His short plays Between Us and Profiled have been produced at Manhattan Repertory Theatre, The Secret Theatre, and Blue Pearl Productions. He is co-creator of Vigilant, which received a workshop at Flying V Theatre. He’s contributed to an editorial piece with Huffington Post Black Voices, “Black Hair Defined”. Brandon has served as a Manhattan Theatre Club Directing Fellow, a Stage Choreographer and Director’s Society Observer and Producing Fellow at Baltimore Center Stage. He is based in the DMV area.
Divinia Shorter is a writer, director, and freelance dramaturg born and based in the DMV. Divinia currently works as the Literary & Artistic Associate at Adventure Theatre MTC and is the co-founder of Greatest City Collective, a non-profit organization focused on uplifting artists and the social causes they care about. A writer of many forms, she is currently working on a collection of sestinas, a novel, and a full-length play. Dramaturgy credits include: Kennedy Center NNPN MFA Playwrights’ Workshop, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, DMV Q-Fests, Quarantined Theatre Company, and Towson University. Her dramaturgical analysis article “Run Me My Language” is available online.
Our 2019-2020 season features an amazing team of female directors who are illustrating beautiful works that have never been seen on ATMTC’s stages. We are so excited to bring our perspective and energy to these productions based on familiar and beloved stories. We hope you are too!
